Whether riding Western or Dressage, you can enjoy a walk, trot, canter or gallop at Rancho Cartagena. Our staff, in conjunction with our neighbors, Finca Casagua Horse Tours and the Painted Pony Guest Ranch can offer you tours of the ranch, sunset rides on the beach, cross country rides. If you wish to purchase, train, or board your horse, Rancho Cartagena can provide you with these services as well.


With an unprecedented shoreline, Guanacaste draws surfers novice and pro alike to enjoy the waves. The tropical climate of Costa Rica brings warm waters and there are shorebreaks for all levels.


The tropical conditions of Costa Rica make it a hot spot for sailing and boating enthusiasts of all kinds. If you don't have your own boat, charters are widely available for charter, sunset cruises and snorkeling adventures.


The tropical rainforest canopies of lush Costa Rica offer once in a lifetime zipline tours that will have you buzzing for days. Zip from treetop to treetop with one of the established tour companies in the area. Or why not try them all!

canoe & Kayak

Meander along mangroves through narrow river trails, experience the rapids of rushing rivers, and enjoy the shorebreak with sea kayaking. There are many tour companies to choose from that will guide you or you can leap right in with rentals and take off on an adventure.

The vistas of rolling Costa Rica are simply breathtaking. With many miles of hiking trails available, you really can connect to nature here. The horse trails that go through Rancho Cartagena are also for our hikers. Some of the trails go past rivers and forrests and some are for easy walking just inside our beautiful community. If you are a big fan of hiking you could hike for days, even walking from the horse ranch until the beaches of Potrero or Brasilito. From there you could take a bus back to the ranch.


There are many opportunities to get up and close with wildlife in the Guanacaste region. From sloths to monkeys to many bird species, you will be met with awe on a daily basis. Art, Dance and Theatre

Art, dance and theatre are local to Rancho Cartagena. You can be part of a theatre production or watch “live” in the audience, hone your painting skills or learn to dance! We have our own Theatre and Dance productions – mixing the cultures – where you can bring the entire family and an Art Studio for established and aspiring artists, both located just 20 minutes from the ranch.

Cultural Experiences

The Guanacaste region has a deep cultural history. Due to its colonial past, the region offers a unique combination of the native Chorotega culture with Spanish influences.
